Libros Digitales -eBooks
To create eBooks there are many apps. I have been using recently CBB with our iPads ( Creative book builder) which creates epub files that you can share with another device or upload it to dropbox. This app allows you to edit the cover, index, chapters, add images or videos and even record their voices.
They have been creating audiobooks related to our Project about the rainbow trout. The hardest part has been the sharing since the connection to the internet with the iPads is a little bit of a mission impossible sometimes , I am sure you know what I mean... So I had to do extra work. For the rest, the app is quite simple and intuitive and they need only one time to be real experts doing this. I have used it with my grade 3/4 and also with our grade 2 buddies.
The work is saved automatically and once you save it in your dropbox ( which I highly recommend) , you can create a link to their wiki or web page, where their parents can see and download in a portable device , you need to have iBooks, Kobo, PDF reader , Evernote, Edmodo, or any other app that supports epub file.
Unless you create an account on a site like "epubbud" ( which is the only free one I know for this) , you can not read the books on a desktop. eBooks are meant to be read mainly in portable devices anyways and many of our students and parents have smartphones and tablets.
Once you create the book, it is saved in that iPad library, so I uploaded all of them to the master computer and then download all of them into every iPad so that all the books can be read from every iPad in the school.
The books were created in Spanish, so I had to enable the spanish keyboard in the iPads to help them with the spelling. Needless to say, they were very excited to write. I first asked them to write a draft copy in their books, and my most reluctant ones run like the wind to be the first ones to get an iPad. Eventually, this is my main goal, to encourage them to write in Spanish , which is maybe the hardest skill; and it was really easy because they had the editing tool to help them. They can't wait to write the next book, now they are writing bilingual books and they seem to be liking it very much too.
They shared their books with their parents during our student led conferences and they were really impressed.
Anyways, coming back to the technical side of it, new apps come everyday and I am staring to experiment with an iPad app called "My story" which I like for the little ones because they can draw on the screen. You can also share easily with dropbox, iBooks, PDF reader, Kobo and CBB too.
